Visit to Abbey Farm and The Pinewoods

Narnia and Emerald City enjoyed their visit to Abbey Farm and the Pinewoods in Woodhall Spa.

Luckily the weather was kind on both days! The ruins of Kirkstead Abbey stand in the grounds of the farm. The children learnt how the food grown on the farm is planted, cultivated and grown to end up on our dinner tables. We also found out the farm has to leave some of its land as set aside. This is so the insects have a habitat as the farmer doesn't want them eating his crops! On the tractor ride we saw all the fields. They were growing wheat, barley, potatoes, carrots and sugar beet. Elephant grass is grown and sold to burn for electricity and maize is grown for animal feed.  In the woods the children learnt how to identify different trees. They created some excellent artwork using natural elements found in the woods.
